National Measures Report 2015

Local climate action plans help reduce emissions and create healthier communities

More than 90 per cent of Canadian municipalities surveyed for the Partners for Climate Protection program’s new National Measures Report 2015 are using climate change action plans or policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy.

The report shows how local climate change action plans guide municipalities to reduce carbon emissions, enhance the environment and create healthier communities.

These activities are aligned with the recent funding announcement by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to invest $75 million to expand FCM’s role in supporting Canadian municipalities to take action and reach their climate goals.

You can use this report as a tool to kick-start the development of your municipality’s climate action plan or advance the implementation of an existing one. It describes best practices and proven approaches supported by PCP’s on-the-ground data, including:

  • Leading examples of climate change action plans and implemented projects that can serve as prototypes for your own municipalities.
  • Options and sources for innovative funding structures, such as FCM’s Green Municipal Fund.
  • Feature articles from key partner organizations supporting municipalities in climate change planning and implementation.
